Chapter 18

Sadie woke with a jerk. She blinked and shook her head. Then she looked down at her laptop and found she’d fallen asleep with her hand on the keyboard. Zs filled the entire page, and as she scrolled she found this had been going on for a while. She arrived at the beginning of it and deleted the rest. Despite her aching wrist, the pounding headache, and the crick in her neck, Sadie smiled.

Leon, playing the part of a gentleman, had walked her to her door, thoroughly kissed her goodnight, and then had left.

The memory of his hands and his lips sent a rush of emotion and warmth through her. The fact that he hadn’t even asked to come inside made it better.

She didn’t mind. Slow was fine with her.

Plus, it had given her the rest of the night to write. And write she had. Pages and pages of fortunes, greeting cards, and uplifting memes flew by as she scrolled to the top of her document. More than she needed for her proposal. More than she would need for the first few months after launching her business.

A contented sigh left her lips, and Sadie glanced over at the sliding glass door. The blinds blocked the light from newly risen sun, but she knew that Leon was just the jump of a fence away. It didn’t feel real. Wouldn’t feel real for a while. And what were they supposed to do when she left tomorrow?

She shook her head and rose. A spot in her lower back cracked as she reached toward the ceiling.

Not that she had any reason to stay in New Orleans. That had been Brian’s place, not hers. With an online business, she could live anywhere. If Leon was here, she could move back. Maybe even live with her parents for a few months while she got her business up and going.

“No,” Sadie said. Like every girl ever, she was getting ahead of herself. She didn’t even know what this thing was between her and Leon.

She knew she liked it. She knew she wanted to explore it. She’d been surprised by his gentle intensity, and deep down she knew he wanted to see where this would go, too.

A few times at the club the night before, she’d wondered if he could be with someone like her. With beautiful women draped all over him and prestigious men asking for his number, Sadie wondered if Leon could live a simple life.

However, each time he’d grasped her hand, she’d felt his need for her, his desire to be with her, and the assurance that nothing could get in the way of that desire.

Sadie started a pot of coffee and thought about going to take a shower, but she wanted to finish her proposal. It wasn’t due for three days, but the drive pushed her back to the table, and she sat.

Her hands flew over the keyboard, using the mouse to place each and every letter in just the right position. A smile spread her lips, and she began to hum.
